Codman Square Health Forum Dec. 7

On Wednesday, December 7, there will be a community forum at the Great Hall, 6 Norfolk Street, the fourth in this year's series of annual citywide health forums. The forum is hosted by the Boston Public Health Commission and Codman Square Neighborhood Council, the Boston Alliance for Community Health, and BOLD (Breath of Life Dorchester) Teens. At the meeting, the latest Health of Boston report information such as the consumption of sugar sweetened beverages, rates of resulting chronic disease, and recent health initiatives in the community and their impact. Hidden Hero Awards @ Codman Square Nov. 18

On November 18, The Codman Square Neighborhood Council will be holding its 16th annual Hidden Heroes Celebration in collaboration with the Four Corners Action Coalition. The event is meant to honor “hidden heroes” around the Dorchester community, and you are invited to join! The event will be held at the Great Hall, 6 Norfolk Street, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Residents are invited to nominate community members for one of four awards each August, for Civic leadership, Neighborhood Leadership, Youth Leadership, and the “Millennium Award” – an award for residents who have contributed to the completion of the Millennium project.

Codman Square Farmers' Market Kick Off Event, Jul. 21

Food and fun descend upon Codman Square! Come to Codman Commons (corner of Washington St. & Talbot Ave.) for the Codman Square Farmers' Market Kick Off Event! The kickoff, which begins at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 21, 2011, features food demonstrations; presentations from community members, youth and elected officials; resource tables; entertainment and of course the market itself!

Vendors include Silverbrook Farm a co-op of 6 farms which grows sustainable crops without herbicides or pesticides in Dartmouth, MA; and Iggy's Bread of the World, which bakes old-world, breads fresh, every day, using the organic, natural ingredients.

3rd Annual Outside Movie Night: Jul. 22, Jul. 29 & Aug. 12

Boston City Councillor Charles C. Yancey, B.O.L.D. Teens, and the Codman Square Neighborhood Council present Codman Square’s third annual Outside Movie Night series this July and August at the Second Church of the Nazarene in Dorchester.

The movies, which will be shown every Friday at 8:00 p.m. at 600 Washington Street in Codman Square, include Wall-E on July 22, Peter Pan on July 29, and Despicable Me on August 12. The Second Church of the Nazarene (44 Moultrie St., Dorchester) provides space on the side of its building for the movie’s projection and for community members to sit on the grass. World No Tobacco Day Action & Press Conference, May 31

Boston Alliance for Community HealthJoin the Boston Alliance for Community Health for World No Tobacco Day, on May 31, 2011 from 3:00 to 5:30 p.m. at Boston City Hall Plaza /Government Center Station. A 4 p.m. press conference will bring this issue to the forefront of the public's hearts and minds! See the 1200 shoes representing the lives lost every day in the US due to tobacco use and exposure. Support efforts to reduce the demand for tobacco products. Learn about cessation resources for smokers.
