The John P. Holland Council proudly presents its 2nd Annual Dorchester Community Flea Market & Bazaar! Join them for food, face painting and raffles on Saturday, September 17, 2011, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the John P. Holland Community Center, 85 Olney Street, Dorchester, MA 02124. "Gnomeo and Juliet" in Garvey Park, Jul. 22

Thanks to BCYF, Garvey Park will be R.O.C.K.ing on July 22. The Leahy-Holloran Community Center has secured equipment to host a FREE outdoor movie in right field of Garvey Park @ 8:20 p.m. Bring some snacks, a blanket or chairs and bug spray and enjoy Gnomeo and Juliet. The more families and neighbors that come out and enjoy this great evening, the more likely it will happen again! While there, ask about all the great programming that is taking place thanks to the Leahy~Holloran Community Center and their partners: BCYF, Boston R.O.C.K.S., St. Ann CYO/Youth Ministry, PHNA and the Bostonian Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

BCYF R.O.C.K. the Park

CampThe R.O.C.K. the Park program is a free drop in program for youth ages 8-18 who are not actively involved or enrolled in a traditional summer camp or program. Site slots are on a first-come, first serve basis at Garvey Park in Dorchester for up to 50 children daily and operates Monday through Friday, 2 to 7 p.m.  Learn the fundamentals of a variety of sports, learn skills, participate in drills and learn the values of teamwork and sportsmanship! Dress Addressed 3rd Annual Prom Dress Drive, May 10, 24, 31

Ladies - do you need a dress or accessories for prom? The Grove Hall Community Center is hosting its third annual Prom Dress Drive to ensure all young women can attend their prom and look fabulous at the same time! You may keep the dress you find at the drive. This event will take place at 51 Geneva Ave from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m on Tuesday, May 10; 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 24; and 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 31. See you there!

Pitch, Hit & Run at Garvey Park, Apr. 20

Pitch, Hit, & Run -- Image Credit to VicciBoys and girls ages 7 to 14 can compete in a pitch, hit and run baseball competition sponsored by Aquafina and the Boston Center for Youth and Families on Wednesday, April 20 at Garvey Park on Neponset Ave. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Walk-in registration only. The same event will be held on Thursday, April 21 at Fallon Field in Roslindale and Friday, April 22 at Jim Rice Field at Ramsey Park, South End.

Winners will move on to a sectional championship and then on to the team championship round. There will be a national championship held at the 2011 MLB All Star game in Phoenix, Arizona. For more information contact Mike Devlin at 617-635-4920 x2145 or mike.devlin@cityofboston.gov.

Many community centers rent their facilities out for meetings and events. Contact your neighborhood community center to get more information about fees and availability.

GIRLS Initiative (Growth, Intervention, Respect, Leadership & Support for Girls): The GIRLS Initiative features the Girls' Leadership Corps made up of peer leaders representing all of Boston's neighborhoods. These peer leaders will be leaders both at their local community center and as part of a citywide corps. Each week, they will facilitate workshops at their assigned neighborhood community centers and support programming for girls. During the summer, the GIRLS Initiative sponsors several "Girls' Night Out" events at various community centers around the city. Contact Erika Butler at 617-635-4920 x2314 for more information about the programming available just for girls through the GIRLS Initiative.

Almost all neighborhood community centers provide a free, walk-in breakfast and lunch to youth 18 and under during the summer through the school department. Contact Boston Public Schools at 617-635-9000 for more information about free summer meals. Many community centers also offer a free senior lunch program. Call your local community center for details.

Mission: 

The Leahy-Holloran Community Center is a non-profit organization. The center has been serving the Dorchester Community since October 1973. We serve Pre-Schoolers, children, teens, adults and the elderly.

During the academic year we offer Pre-School/K1, childrens' after school activities, adult classes and a teen center. Some of the programs currently available are swimming lessons for adults and children, children’s drawing classes, adult computer classes, sewing lessons, line dancing, water aerobics, adult and children ceramic classes.

The name of the Murphy Community Center was changed to the Leahy-Holloran Community Center in 2009.
