Boston City Singers provides comprehensive music training to children and youth in Boston’s inner city and neighboring communities. BCS inspires and trains the artist, student, and ambassador within each child!

Boston City Singers teaches over 350 inspiring young singers in nine choruses. Most BCS singers are boys and girls (ages 4-18) from Boston‘s underserved neighborhoods.  BCS accepts new k-12 students with varying musical abilities; offers a sliding scale tuition.  Over 80% of members require substantial scholarship support to participate. Boston City Singers uses a distinctive curriculum that trains children as young as four years old to learn to sing well. Each  singer progresses through several levels: Kodály Singing Class, Neighborhood Training Chorus, Concert Chorus II, and Concert Chorus. The singers learn about diverse communities and cultures by performing an extensive repertoire including gospel music, international folk music, opera, jazz, and medieval chant.

On November 4th 2009, College Bound Dorchester received the Coming Up Taller Award for its Art a la Carte program at a ceremony hosted by First Lady Michelle Obama at the White House. At the ceremony, Mrs. Obama commended Art a la Carte and all of the award winners by stating, "Ultimately, each of your programs is using achievement in the arts as a bridge to achievement in life." She continued, "You ask our young people to dream, and you give them the tools to fulfill those dreams. You affirm that their contributions are valuable, and their success matters to all of us. You help them see beyond the circumstances of their lives to the world of possibility that awaits them. And for that, we honor you."

DISTINCTIVE ASPECTS OF THE COLLECTION
The Uphams Corner Branch has a collection which reflects the needs and interest of the surrounding community. In addition to a core group of popular fiction and representative nonfiction, there are materials in French, Portuguese and Spanish languages, well rounded African American authors and reference sections and a large DVD collection.

RECURRING PROGRAMMING OFFERED
Preschool, Reading Readiness and toddler programs are offered weekly. Teenagers are available four afternoons a week to help children with their homework through the HAP program.

SPECIAL PROGRAMMING OFFERED
The branch hosts monthly programs for adults and families alternating between informational and entertaining offerings. During the summer Uphams Corner participates in the Read Your Way to Fenway and Statewide Summer Reading programs.

HISTORY
In 1904 the Uphams Corner Branch Library moved from a temporary store-front location on Dudley Street to the two-year-old municipal building on Columbia Road. Upon entering the building, the adult room was on the left, a floor above the swimming pool, and the children's room used a common area on the right side of the hall. When the swimming pool developed leaks and fell into disuse for some time, the children's room took occupancy in this space. It maintained a separate entrance and circulation desk until the 1970s. After renovations to the building in 1989, only one entrance to the Library remained -- through the adult room. Many residents still recall the swimming pool and public showers of their childhood.

The Steppingstone Academy is a free, summer and after-school academic program that prepares motivated Boston schoolchildren who would not otherwise have the opportunity, to gain admission to and succeed at public exam and independent schools. The Steppingstone Academy offers 14 months and 26 months of tuition-free rigorous summer and after-school classes for current Boston schoolchildren in 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th grades. Families interested in applying attend a Family Information Meeting [held in October, November or December] - students are nominated by teachers, principals and community leaders [in 2009, due Friday, Dec. 4]

Peace First is dedicated to building effective school climates by focusing on two major efforts within a school: teaching children the skills of conflict resolution and civic engagement; and providing educators with the critical skills and knowledge to integrate social-emotional learning into the school’s curriculum and culture.
