GH2 Back To School Cookout, Aug. 31

Join Grove Hall Getting Healther (GH2) for a Back to School Cookout featuring food, prizes, games, back to school supplies (bags, pens, notebooks, etc.) and celebration! The GH2 cookout takes place on Wednesday, August 31st, 2011, from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at 320A Blue Hill Ave., Dorchester, MA 02121. Go up Lawrence Ave. and you will see the group in the parking lot.

Clemente Course Now Accepting Applications!

Clemente CourseThe Clemente Course, a comprehensive introduction to the humanities through the study of literature, art history, philosophy and American history, is now accepting applications for the 2011-2012 season! During the course, students are coached in writing and developing critical thinking skills. The Clemente Course is accredited by Bard College and qualifies students for six college credits upon successful completion of the program. Accepted students receive the benefits of this wonderful program for free - please spread the word about this incredible opportunity for educational enrichment.

J. E. Burke Students Get Motivated!

Get SchooledAbsenteeism and truancy are battles that schools fight every day. But some schools are bringing new tactics to the fight – and seeing the results. On May 24, three students from Jeremiah E. Burke High School in Dorchester, MA were each awarded $1,000 college scholarships for their leadership during a national attendance challenge. The Get Schooled Foundation asked students to step up the Get MotivatED Challenge by boosting their attendance. Seniors at Dorchester’s Jeremiah Burke High School were rewarded for all the hard work they put forth this year.

Viet-AID Launches Summer Program for First Grade Students

Viet-AIDViet‐AID is excited to host a new annual summer program for first grade students. The program, which runs July 11 to August 19 in Fields Corner, is designed to provide youth who are English Language Learners an opportunity for academic and cultural enrichment over the summer. It offers half‐day programming, with a strong focus on literacy instruction. The program includes breakfast, three hours of literacy instruction and lunch. Students must be English Language Learners, have finished with K2 (rising 1st graders) and attend Boston Public Schools.
