"Sickle Cellebration" Walk & Health Fair, Sep. 17

Greater Boston Sickle Cell Disease Association

Come walk, talk, eat, dance, learn, laugh and stay healthy! Greater Boston Sickle Cell Disease Association (GBSCDA) will hold the 6th Annual "Sickle Cellebration in the Park" Walk & Health Fair on Saturday, September 17th, 2011. The fair, which takes place in Franklin Park from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., features peformances, music, food and dance, free health screenings and a "Walk-A-Thon." Registration begins at 11 a.m. and the Walk-a-Thon kicks off at 12 p.m.

"Blue is Back" Family Beach Bash and Splash, Aug. 12 and 13

Save the Harbor/Save the Bay "Best Beaches"Save the Harbor / Save the Bay will host the "Blue is Back" Family Beach Bash and Splash for kids and families on Carson Beach on August 12 and 13, 2011. On Friday, August 12 the celebration will kick off with a day of kids' events and activities on Carson Beach, including a sand castle competition and kite-flying contest. Fun in the Sun with WIC, Aug. 19

Come have fun in the sun with WIC in Franklin Park and enjoy free raffles, free giveaways and free prizes! "Fun in the Sun" will take place at the Franklin Park Zoo on Friday, August 19, 2011 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This is a free informational day to provide the community with WIC information and other services available to them such as Daycare, Nutrition, Health, Fuel Assistance, Insurance, Housing, Job, Playgroups and Libraries. This event will be held outside of the zoo’s zebra entrance (across from Peabody Circle). Event does not include admission to the zoo. 

Outreach Event for Children and Families, Jun. 4

BGC DorchesterPlease join the Boys and Girls Clubs of Dorchester on June 4, 2011 for an outreach event directed at children and families. This fun and social event features games, music, literacy activities, free dental screenings, opportunities to meet other families, a school bus tour for "first-time riders," refreshments and much more. Event runs from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Dorchester, 1135 Dorchester Ave, Dorchester, MA 02125. Is your child going to Kindergarten? At 3:30 p.m., BGC will host the DW Counts Down to Kindergarten Play, in which Arthur the Aardvark helps his little sister D.W. learn some helpful things about going to Kindergarten. Questions? "Moving For Life: Fitness for the Whole Family," Jun. 11

Dance, stretch, take yoga classes, play sports, get health resources and run around with your friends and family! "Moving For Life: Fitness for the Whole Family" will take place on Saturday, June 11, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., at the Walker Playground, Norfolk St., Mattapan (adjacent to the Mildred Ave. Community Center in Mattapan). This event, hosted by the Mattapan Food and Fitness Coalition, intends to promote the utilization of community resources for physical fitness.

Family Fun Night, Apr. 26

Bring your family to celebrate Easter, eat a hearty meal and learn about resources for young children! Smart from the Start will host a Family Fun Night on Tuesday, April 26th, 2011 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Family Fun includes an egg hunt, egg decorating, Girl Scouts "Bullying" video showcase, information for summer resources and more. Smart from the Start is a school readiness and support program for low-income families with children ages 0 to 5 and pregnant women.

LearningWorks is ABCD's workforce development center. Located in downtown Boston, it offers a variety of education, training and support services for low-income adults. The center is also a resource for employers seeking qualified staff or training opportunities. LearningWorks facilities include a computer lab and a self-directed resource room with automated job banks and resume writing programs.

Key Programs Offered: 

-JobNet provides career assessment and counseling, job readiness activities and job search and placement services. A multilingual staff works with automated job banks to create career opportunities for job seekers on all rungs of the career ladder. -Downtown Adult Literacy Program tutors adults from 18yrs and older one-on-one on basic reading skills and GED preparation. Students also learn basic computer skills, enjoy field trips and guest lectures, and take part in Boston's annual Adult Education and Literacy Week. -Young Parents Program serves 16-to-21-year-old parents and expectant parents. The program provides individual counseling and support, GED preparation, parenting skills classes, job and career development counseling and support groups.
