Mission: 

The mission of the Greater Boston Nazarene Compassionate Center (GBNCC ) is to provide relief to the most vulnerable, distressed and underprivileged people of the Boston area, with particular emphasis on the Haitian community and the youth in Dorchester, Mattapan, Roslindale and the surrounding communities.

As faith leaders, we explore the root causes of factors that are jeopardizing the health and welfare of our congregations, and take a vested interest in building the capacity of our community through outreach and education. The Dorchester Nazarene Church was among the first Haitian congregations in Boston to openly address the issue of HIV/AIDS prevention and education. We strongly embrace the idea of reaching out and addressing the needs of the whole individual in a culturally complete and sensitive way. Our aim is to promote the health and welfare of our community and also to serve as a supportive link to the wider U.S. social and economic system.

For the past 7 years, the GBNCC has been home to many successful programs and activities that have significantly impacted the lives of many thousands of individuals. GBNCC ’s main program areas are Adult Basic Education (ESL/Computer Literacy), Youth Services (including the Higher Education Resource Center), Health Education, and Food and Nutrition Services.

We have attracted funding from local foundations and corporations, including the Boston Foundation, CCHER, Boston Capacity Tank, United Way of Massachusetts Bay, Clippership Foundation, English for New Bostonians, BMA, Komen Foundation, the Boston Foundation and many others. We combine grants, donations, volunteer efforts, church support, and professional services to cover our expenses, and are continually developing relationships with new funders.

Membership in the Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester is open to all children between the ages of 6 and 17. Our Club has an "open door" policy. Members are well supervised while in the program areas, but may come and go as they please. The membership fee for all ages is just $5.00 per year, or $10.00 per year for immediate family members registering at the same time. All members must furnish proof of age when signing up.

Each program is age appropriate, supervised, structured and most importantly - designed to accommodate the wide variety of learning styles, social skills and intellectual abilities that our children bring to the Club each and every day. Members are grouped according to age and interests with activities falling into the following categories:

Life Skills - Leadership groups for 13-17 year olds (Keystone Club) and 10-13 year olds (Torch Club) teach civic responsibility and pride

Athletics - Basketball, hockey, soccer, baseball, track, volleyball, gymnastics, Judo and more

Aquatics - Organized swim teams, swimming lessons and drop-in swimming for all ages and levels

Mission: 

Countdown to Kindergarten engages families, educators and the community in a citywide effort to enhance early learning opportunities and to support the transition into kindergarten. Mayor Menino, the Boston School Committee and Superintendent Johnson partner with 28 local organizations to implement a school readiness campaign that helps families participate actively in their children's education right from the start, understand the value of kindergarten, and learn how to choose schools and then register in the Boston Public Schools (BPS). In Boston, our work has promoted teacher collaboration on school readiness issues; doubled the percent of families visiting schools to make informed registration decisions; and increased the percentage of children who enter BPS at kindergarten rather than first grade. It has also resulted in more schools being ready to engage families.

How to get involved/application guidelines and procedures: 

Families should start preparing for Kindergarten (K1 for 4 year old and K2 for 5 year old) a full year in advance of their start date, which is the September before their child turns 4 or 5. For a few families, it may start sooner. Boston Public Schools (BPS) has a number of a very limited number of seats for K0 programs for children who are 3 by September 1. There are 75 Early Learning Centers, Elementary and K-8 schools in the City of Boston. Families can choose from a number of schools that are located in their ZONE.

Attend a Countdown to Kindergarten Information Session for answers to all your questions about BPS schools, the registration process and more. Starting in November, Information Sessions provide tips on the transition and kindergarten selection/enrollment process, along with suggested activities to help families prepare for a successful entry into kindergarten.

Mission: 

Launched in 1990 with 28 young people in a church basement, YBB was the first replication of the YouthBuild model outside of New York. The mission of YouthBuild Boston Inc. (YBB) is to improve opportunities for young people of Boston by teaching skills that will equip them to support themselves and help develop personal and neighborhood responsibility. The guiding principle of YBB is "Youth or young adults, when treated as valuable resources, will realize that they can be partners in rebuilding their community". YBB realizes that the difficulties that young people face must be overcome by addressing the terrible and overwhelming lack of empowerment that they often feel. These feelings are reinforced by a society that views them as part of the problem, and not the solution. YBB recognizes that these individuals are capable of and vital to improving their lives and the condition of their community.
YBB has been successful since its inception. YBB, along with other agencies has contributed to the vibrancy of the community. Consistent funding from the Department of Housing and Urban Development, AmeriCorps, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, YouthBuild USA, the private foundation community, corporations, and individuals, has enabled us to serve Boston youth.

Catholic Charities Greater Boston is a community service center of Catholic Charities, Archdiocese of Boston. Students are generally between the ages of 14 and 21. These youth may be referrals from courts or the Department of Family and Children Services. GED and alternative education programs are bilingual. Career Pathways: The Career Pathways program supports both youth and adult programs with next-step options through career exploration, internships, job shadowing opportunities, and employment. It may also include individual case management.

Mission: 

The program addresses the unique needs of high-risk urban youth and their families by placing licensed clinical social workers in district police stations throughout the city. YSPN social workers receive referrals from police officers, incident reports, Boston Cares and walk-ins. YSPN services include intake/assessment, crisis intervention, advocacy, referral, clinical case management and ongoing individual and family therapy. Additionally, when there is an incidence of community violence, YSPN provides critical incident trauma services to individuals, groups, and the community. Since its inception in 1996, YSPN has served more than 8,000 youth (80% between the ages of 13-21) and families from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds.
