HIV Testing

HealthAs many as 200,000 Americans are currently infected with the HIV virus and do not know it. And those who do not know they are infected are far more likely to infect someone else with the virus; every 9.5 minutes someone in the United States is infected with HIV. That’s almost 151 people every day! Getting tested helps prevent the spread of HIV, yet many who are at risk have never tested before.

NeponsetHealth Center and Geiger Gibson Community Health Center offers free anonymous HIV testing. Our walk-in testing hours at Neponset Health Center are Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. and Fridays from 1 to 5 p.m. Geiger Gibson Community Health Center’s walk in testing hours are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. To make an appointment during other business hours, call 617-282-3200 x3176. Neponset Health Center is located at 398 Neponset Ave, in Neponset Circle. Geiger Gibson Community Health Center is located at 250 Mount Vernon Street.

The LIFE Study Seeks Senior Volunteers (ages 70-89)

Seniors! Do you have difficulty walking, getting in and out of a chair, or climbing stairs? If you have some trouble with these or other daily activities and are between the ages of 70 and 89, you may qualify for The LIFE Study at Tufts University.

The goal of The LIFE Study is to find out how older people can make changes in their lives to help them to remain independent members of their communities for a longer period of time. Eligible participants will be randomized into one of two lifestyle interventions consisting of either a structured physical activity program or a health education program.

Eligible participants can choose to attend their intervention sessions in either downtown Boston at the Tufts University campus and nearby Boston Young Men’s Christian Union gymnasium or at Dorchester House Multi-Service Center (1353 Dorchester Avenue). Transportation options are available as needed. Study participants will receive monetary compensation for their time when screening and follow-up clinic visits are completed.

For more information, please call 1-800-738-7555, write life-volunteers@tufts.edu, or visit www.thelifestudy.org/enroll.

Free HIV Testing at Neponset Health Center

A dozen red roses, heart shaped boxes of chocolates and pastel candy hearts asking “Will you be mine?”. Yes, it is February! It is time once again to show our partners, spouses, and love interests how important they are to us.

Why not make this Valentine’s Day gift far more meaningful and lasting than the usual cards and candy you give every year? Now is a good time to show you care about your partner’s health and wellbeing, as well as your own. How? By getting tested and finding out what your HIV status is. Even better to bring your partner with you to Neponset Health Center’s HIV testing hours, and both of you get tested! Testing is free, anonymous and fast; you’ll receive your results within 20 minutes.

You or your partner may feel scared or nervous about getting tested. This is a natural reaction that many people experience. Talking with others about your concerns can help. When you and your partner go together to get tested, you receive mutual support from each other. That makes it easier for both of you.

Neponset Health Center’s walk-in HIV testing hours are Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30 to 8:30 pm and Fridays from 1 to 5 pm. No appointment is needed, just walk in and tell a patient access representative at the front desk that you want to be tested. To make an appointment during other business hours, call Jake at 617-282-3200 x2236.

Give your Valentine, and yourself, a special gift for Valentine’s Day this year. Get Tested…and Know!

Moving Beyond Icebreakers 101

Interactive methods are usually ignored or marginalized as "icebreakers" to be used only in the first few moments of a meeting, or first few hours or days of a group's experience. This workshop demonstrates the depth and richness of several interactive exercises and how to use them to engage the hearts, minds, and energies of diverse groups of people. Learn how seemingly simple activities can help your participants connect to the goals of your meeting, as well as to one another. You will leave this workshop with specific tools you can use in the next meeting you facilitate!
