The drop in membership program at Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester (BGCD) is open to all children between the ages of 7 – 18. Each day Monday-Friday from 2:00-6:00pm members will participate in activities based on a rotation schedule. All Members under the age of 12 not participating in a specialized program from 6-8pm are required to depart the Club at 6:00pm. Teen Programming will run until 8:30pm, all teens must depart by 9pm.

 

The Bantam Program serves members ages five and six. Members are grouped according to age and will travel to each area with designated staff members. Bantams will meet each afternoon at the McLaughlin site and participate in developmentally appropriate programming. The cost is $50 per session ($150 per year) and registration is limited to 50 children.

How to get involved/application guidelines and procedures: 

Membership in the Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester (BGCD) is open to all children between the ages of 5 and 18. Members must be five by September 1st. BGCD has an "open door" policy. Members are well supervised while in the program areas, but may come and go as they please. The membership fee for all ages is just $5.00 per year, or $10.00 per year for immediate family members registering at the same time. All members must furnish proof of age when signing up. Orientation After registering, members must attend a member's orientation. Parents are encouraged to attend as well. Registration for summer programming begins in March and is offered on first-come-first-served basis (cost varies by year).

GIRLS Initiative (Growth, Intervention, Respect, Leadership & Support for Girls): The GIRLS Initiative features the Girls' Leadership Corps made up of peer leaders representing all of Boston's neighborhoods. These peer leaders will be leaders both at their local community center and as part of a citywide corps. Each week, they will facilitate workshops at their assigned neighborhood community centers and support programming for girls. During the summer, the GIRLS Initiative sponsors several "Girls' Night Out" events at various community centers around the city. Almost all neighborhood community centers provide a free, walk-in breakfast and lunch to youth 18 and under during the summer through the school department. Contact Boston Public Schools at 617-635-9000 for more information about free summer meals. Many community centers also offer a free senior lunch program. DISTINCTIVE ASPECTS OF THE COLLECTION
The Uphams Corner Branch has a collection which reflects the needs and interest of the surrounding community. In addition to a core group of popular fiction and representative nonfiction, there are materials in French, Portuguese and Spanish languages, well rounded African American authors and reference sections and a large DVD collection.

RECURRING PROGRAMMING OFFERED
Preschool, Reading Readiness and toddler programs are offered weekly. Teenagers are available four afternoons a week to help children with their homework through the HAP program.

SPECIAL PROGRAMMING OFFERED
The branch hosts monthly programs for adults and families alternating between informational and entertaining offerings. During the summer Uphams Corner participates in the Read Your Way to Fenway and Statewide Summer Reading programs.

HISTORY
In 1904 the Uphams Corner Branch Library moved from a temporary store-front location on Dudley Street to the two-year-old municipal building on Columbia Road. Upon entering the building, the adult room was on the left, a floor above the swimming pool, and the children's room used a common area on the right side of the hall. When the swimming pool developed leaks and fell into disuse for some time, the children's room took occupancy in this space. It maintained a separate entrance and circulation desk until the 1970s. After renovations to the building in 1989, only one entrance to the Library remained -- through the adult room. Many residents still recall the swimming pool and public showers of their childhood.
