Kids visit for FREE Franklin Park Zoo | January 4 & 5

Saturday and Sunday, January 4 and 5, join Franklin Park Zoo as they kick off a New Year of fun and adventure! All kids will receive free admission, when accompanied by a paying adult, to Franklin Park Zoo and Stone Zoo (this promotion does not include the event Zoolights at Stone Zoo).
 
It’s a wonderful opportunity to spend a memorable day with family and friends while discovering all of the incredible animals at each Zoo.

Annual Holiday Coat Drive | December 19

Healthworks Community Fitness will be holding their Annual Coat Drive on Thursday, December 19th, 5:30PM -8PM. As the weather is becoming increasingly cold and frigid, a warm coat is crucial.  Last year, Healthworks Community Fitness gave away over 400 winter coats and are hoping to surpass that this year. 
 
If you or anyone you know is in need of a winter coat there will be one, provided that there are still some left. Coats will be given out to men women and childre,

Defensive Aids in Situations of Help | January 22

Suffolk County Sheriff Steven W. Tompkins is empowering women* to protect themselves, and each other through DASH ( Defensive Aids in Situations of Help).
 
D.A.S.H. is a free self-defense training seminar for women who seek a greater sense of security and confidence.
 
The seminar will be held  Wednesday, January 22nd from 5:30-8:30pm at the Grove Hall Community Center (51 Geneva Ave in Dorchester, Ma 02121).

African Drumming Workshop with Mohamad Kalifa Kamar | December 19

African Drumming Workshop with Mohamad Kalifa Kamar, Thursday, December 19, 2013, 4 – 5pm. This event will be held in the Grove Hall Branch of the Boston Public Library (41 Geneva Avenue, Dorchester, MA 02121)
 
Mohamad Kalifa Kamara, a master drummer and dancer, began his career in Gambia where he started his own dancing and drumming group. For this workshop, Mohamad will explain to youth the history of drumming and how drums are used as a form of communication in African villages. Participants will also have the opportunity to play Mohamad’s various drums. For children ages 6 and up.
 
This event is free and is open to the public. Space is limited; please register with the children’s librarian.

On Monday December 16 between, 6- 7 p.m. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend and Thomas Fitzgerald share stories of Rose and Joe Kennedy (Townsend's grandparents and Fitzgerald's aunt and uncle) to launch the new book, Rose Kennedy's Family Album, featuring the Kennedy matriarch's personal photos spanning more than 60 years, from 1878 to 1946. Pulitzer Prize-winning former Boston Globe columnist Eileen McNamara moderates.
