Texans Krump at DotWell Teen Center & Love It

Wednesday, March 17th, a traveling performance arts group called “Kids who Care” from Fort Worth, Texas came to the DotWell Teen Center to learn to Krump. 37 youth took part in a Krumping lesson from I AMM Krump instructor Eddie Brimage. They learned some basic moves as well as how to use the word “buck” as a positive adjective.

After the lesson they performed excerpts from their own play and shared their commitment to make art that helps to make the world a better place. The performance impressed the Krumpers and teen center members who were in attendance; they sang, dance, and rapped about brotherhood and unity. Following their presentation everyone, kids and adults, Northerners and Southerners, Krumpers and singers, held hands in a large closing circle. Eddie and the Krumpers did a final series of battles to uproarious applause and giggles from the Texans, and then everyone happily went their separate ways.

As they were leaving, the visiting group left some quotes on the Teen Center wall. Their comments were ecstatically positive:

“You were awesome! Come to Texas KWC”
“ya’ll are buck. Love Laura, Texas”
“Nick Laughlin can now Krump. Please come to Fort Worth”
“Taylor Fox from Texas Loves ya’ll”

They also had some valuable parting conversations with DotWell teens on their way out. DotWell Teen Alonso White complemented a KWC youth named Zack on his singing. Zack thanked Alonso and invited him to come to the KWC summer camp this year, citing the superior barbeque food in Texas as one of many reasons why he should come. The event was a great opportunity for cross country and cross cultural connections. It was still sunny outside when the group headed towards the Fields Corner T station, laughing, waving, and promising to stay in touch.
