Calling all candidates for the Mayor’s Youth Council 2010-2011!

The goal of the Mayor’s Youth Council (MYC) program is to give Boston young people an active roll in addressing youth issues and a voice in government. MYC is entering its seventeenth year of youth civic engagement in Boston. MYC alumni are in leadership roles in city, state and federal government – non-profits and the private sector. They continue to give back to the community by serving on boards, as mentors and advocates. Since Mayor Menino established the Mayor’s Youth Council in 1994 – over 100 cities and statewide youth councils have been modeled after Boston in the United States and internationally.

The MYC is looking for young people who are involved in their neighborhood so they can outreach to their peers and help connect them to opportunities. The volunteer members of the MYC participate in skill building activities that will prepare them to involve youth in government. Throughout the year the Council works closely with Mayor Menino, government officials, community leaders, and teens from across Boston to develop innovative solutions to issues teens themselves identify. This year MYC has focused on neighborhood safety, jobs for youth, the environment, health issues, bike transportation, helped launch an anti-bullying cyber safety contest and helped with resource fairs for youth across Boston.

MYC would appreciate any and all assistance in reaching candidates for the Mayor’s Youth Council. Your encouragement will motivate a young person to get involved. The MYC seeks teens throughout Boston who will be juniors and seniors in high school (or alternative programs) in the Fall of 2010. The application deadline is April 15th. Find the online application at www.BostonYouthZone.com/myc - candidates should have their two recommendations sent directly from the person recommending them to the selection committee.
