Duties:
The
Student & Secondary Support unit helps students succeed in school
and be prepared for higher education, rewarding employment, and
responsible citizenship. Programs and activities include: Academic
Support, 21st Century Community Learning Centers Programs, Alternative
Education, Community Service Learning (CSL), Connecting Activities,
Innovative Programs (Title V), McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance, the
Parent and Community Education, and Involvement Advisory Council,
Secondary School Improvement, and Trauma-Sensitive Schools.
As a
member of the Associate Commissioner’s Office of the Center for Student
Support, Career and Education Services, this individual will work with
schools to implement the Board of Education’s recommendations on the
Support and Safety of Gay and Lesbian Students and act as lead staff in
matters related to students civil rights.
As the Associate
Commissioner’s designee, the individual works in collaboration with the
Massachusetts Commission on Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender
Youth to implement the Board of Education’s Recommendation on the
Support and Safety of Gay and Lesbian Students and related
suicide-prevention and violence-prevention efforts.
The qualified candidate will:
work
with schools to develop policies protecting gay, lesbian and other
students from harassment, violence, and discrimination and all students
civil rights;
work with schools to offer training to school personnel in violence prevention, suicide prevention and civil rights;
provide
support to schools that seek assistance in establishing school-based
support groups for gay, lesbian and heterosexual students and providing
school-based counseling for family members of gay and lesbian students;
work
with the Department's Program Quality Assurance Unit on issues and
matter related to the safety of gay and lesbian students as well as to
respond to complaints related to bullying harassment and violations of
Chap. 76, Sec.5;
provide technical assistance to school districts in assigned areas;
develop and update related training materials in assigned areas of responsibility;
other related duties as assigned by the Associate Commissioner;
based on assigment, travel throughout the Commonwealth and out of state is required.
Qualifications:
Minimum Entrance Requirements:
Applicants
must have at least (A) four years of full-time, or equivalent
part-time, professional experience in teaching, educational
administration, educational counseling or educational guidance, or (B)
any equivalent combination of the required experience and the
substitutions below.
I. A Bachelor's degree with a major in
education or special education may be substituted for a maximum of two
years of the required experience.*
II. A Graduate degree with
a major in education, special education, educational administration or
educational counseling may be substituted for a maximum of three years
of the required experience.*
*Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
Special
Requirements: Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid
Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operator's License or the
equivalent from another state may be required.

or related content area, educational program/or service;

Master’s degree or higher in a specific or related educational content
area may be substituted for two years of the required experience --30

The successful candidate will possess:
Bachelor’s Degree required/Master’s preferred, strong written and verbal communication skills;
in depth experience as a trainer;
knowledge
of effective and comprehensive suicide and violence prevention programs
including supportive research, theory and evaluations as related to
issues facing Gay and Lesbian Youth;
knowledge of civil rights and equal education opportunity laws and regulations;
commitment to being part of a learning organization;
ability to work together to provide quality service;
ability to work in teams:
flexibility in responding to changing job requirements;
knowledge of designing and implementing program of specialized support services to any or all groups assigned to this unit.

PLACEMENT IS DETERMINED BY YEARS OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION DIRECTLY
RELATED TO THE POSITION AND THE HUMAN RESOURCES DIVISIONS RECRUITING
GUIDELINES. IN ADDITION, THE SALARY PROVISIONS OF THE APPLICABLE
COLLECTIVE BARGAINING AGREEMENT WILL ALSO APPLY TO PLACEMENT WITHIN THE
SALARY RANGE
