Connect With a Purpose | April 17

The Dorchester YMCA has been hosting a Building Future Leaders Workshop Series this spring. On Thursday, April 17, they will host Connect With a Purpose at the Dorchester YMCA located at 776 Washington Street beginning at 8:00 pm. This session will focus on how to use social media wisely and safely. It will also create awareness on some of the dangers of interacting with strangers online.

In addition they will include a dialogue on cyberbullying, how to protect yourself and treat others. If anyone is interested in volunteering at future workshops, please contact DeNina Lewis, Volunteer Coordinator at denina.lewis@gmail.com

Our Marathon | April 16

Beginning on Wednesday, April 16 through Saturday, April 19 the Boston Public Library will host Our Marathon. This is a community project hosted at Northeastern University. Our Marathon will crowd source digital archives of pictures, videos, stories, and social media related to the Boston Marathon bombing and the aftermath. Visitors will be able to examine some of the thousands of digital items presently in the archive and have the opportunity to add their own stories. Representatives will be available to assist those that wish to share their stories. 

This event will take place at the Central Library in Copley Square located at 700 Boylston Street in Boston beginning at 12 pm. Visit the archives and share your stories with others. 

Adult Learning Program of Jamaica Plain Community Centers

On Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays the Adult Learning Program of Jamaica Plain Community Center (JPCCALP) offers classes for their High School Equivalency (HSE) Program. Currently there are seats available for members of the community to sign up for these classes. In this program students will build the skills needed to pass the 5 tests within the HSE exam, those include reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies. Students will also have the ability to master other skills such as using computers, communication, information processing, problem solving, and critical thinking. These class and materials are free and take place at English High School located at 144 McBride Street in Jamaica Plain.

April Concerts in the Courtyard | April 14

On Monday, April 14 the Amaryllis Chamber Ensemble will perform in the Courtyard of the Central Library in Copley. This event will take place at the Central Library in Copley located at 700 Boylston Street in Boston. The performance will begin at 12:30 pm. The Amaryllis Chamber Ensemble has delighted audiences with diverse and engaging programs. The ensemble takes it name from Bonnie Cochran's composition Amaryllis, the first piece ever performed by the group. This event is sponsored by the Boston Public Library Foundation. Enjoy some exquisite sounds from the Amaryllis Chamber Ensemble this Monday. 

Reading Event at Boston Public Library | April 13

On Sunday, April 13 Boston Public Library will host a reading event. This event will take place in the Boston Room of the Central Library in Copley Square located at 700 Boylston Street in Boston at 2 pm. The author of "The Swan Boat Ride", Frances Driscoll will read her book of a young girl's adventure in the Boston Public Garden. This event is free and great for children up to age 12. There will also be arts and crafts and discussion about the book. 

Caribbean Integration Community Development Event | April 12

On Saturday, April 12 the Caribbean Integration Community Development (CICD) of Boston will host a cultural soiree. The event will showcase the rich culture of the Caribbean nations and give attendees the chance to socialize among different Caribbean groups in Boston. There will also be a discussion of CICD's work within the community and ways to grow the Caribbean community. This event will take place at the Harvard College Student Organization Center at Hilles located at 59 Shepard Street in Cambridge. There will be music provided by Toby Tobas a Steel Drummer/Percussionist. There will also be guest speakers by women within the health field.

Children for Peace Concert | April 12

St. Mark's Parish

On Saturday, April 12 St. Mark's Parish will host the Boston City Singers for their 2nd Annual Children Sing for Peace Concert. This event will take place at St. Mark's Parish located at 1725 Dorchester Avenue in Dorchester. This event will begin at 7 pm. Dorchester based singers- AP Harmony, Cantare, Music on Wednesday, World Rhythm Ensemble, and Tour Choir invite you to come to this hour long concert honoring Martin Richard's ideals of peace and cooperation.

Boston City Singers train and inspire the musician, student, and ambassador in each of their members. This group was founded in 1995 to provide opportunity for Boston's inner city young people. This event is free and donations are accepted.  

Jarvis Green at Dorchester YMCA | April 12

On Saturday, April 12 two time Super Bowl Champion Jarvis Green will speak at the Dorchester YMCA. This event will take place at the Dorchester YMCA located at 776 Washington Street in Dorchester beginning at Noon. Green will speak to youth about overcoming adversity and being a leader. Autographs and Q&A will conclude the event. All youth and community members are welcome to attend this free event; pre-registration is required.

An Evening of Dance at the Strand Theatre | April 11

On Friday, April 11 Dorchester Arts Collaborative has partnered with the Boston Ballet to market their upcoming performance at the Strand Theatre. This event will take place at the Strand Theatre located at 543 Columbia Road in Dorchester. This event will begin at 7:00 pm. This performance incorporates performances by some of the Dorchester community youth programs as well as the Boston Ballet. There will be performances by students from the Boston Ballet School, Adaptive Dance, Taking Steps, and Boston Ballet's Boys in Motion. Tickets are $5 a piece, be sure to purchase yours today.

On Thursday, April 10 there will be a Cape Verdean-Jewish Passover Seder. This event will take place at the Hibernian Hall located at 184 Dudley Street in Roxbury beginning at 6:00 pm. Join the Cape Verdean and Jewish communities for a joyous seder (dinner) meal which celebrates the great connection between the Cape Verdean and Jewish culture.
