Scrub the Hub | April 25 and April 26

On Friday, April 25 and Saturday, April 26 Boston Shines will host a cleanup to involve residents, youth, universities, and members of the community. Boston Shine’s 3 weekend format is Mayor Walsh’s approach to underscoring the importance of Boston spring cleanup. On this weekend the cleanup will take place in West Roxbury, Jamaica Plain, Roxbury, Allston, and Brighton. The Office of Neighborhood Services will call upon constituents to help each other bring vibrancy back to the parks, sidewalks, school years, and streets. Brooms, shovels, and other tools will be provided by the city and will be distributed at one of the thousand sites that have been identified for cleaning. Dot 2 Dot Cafe's Open Mic Night | April 25

On Friday, April 25 the Dot 2 Dot Cafe will host their monthly open mic night. This event will take place at the Dot 2 Dot cafe located at 1739 Dorchester Avenue. This open mic night is in collaboration with the Boston School of Musical Arts located in the Lower Mills. Come support the local musicians, poets, comedians, and other artists in the community. There will also be some lovely home cooked meals provided by Dot 2 Dot. Come support the local artists and enjoy some delicious food.

Boston Cyclist Union Spring Kickoff Party

On Thursday, April 24 the Boston Cyclists Union will host their Spring Kickoff Party. This event is scheduled to take place at Villa Victoria Center for the Arts located at 85 West Newton Street in Boston’s South End from 6:30 until 9:30 pm. This event will have music provided by DJ Trizlam and Mixmaster Mully. Food will be provided by El Pelon. There will also be free beer and wine provided by Cambridge Brewing Company, Top Johnny’s, and Bauer Wine and Spirits. Attendees will also have a chance to take home a Copenhagen Wheel, a new Linus or Fuji bike from Ashmont Cycles, a new folding bike from fBike Direct or many other raffle prizes.

Spring Into Action: April Fitness Camp | April 22-25

From April 22 to the 25th, Sociedad Latina and BCYF Tobin Community Center will host Spring into Action: April Fitness Camp. This camp will take place from 12-5 pm at the BCYF Tobin Community Center located at 1481 Tremont Street in Roxbury. This camp is for children ages 6-18. This camp is free to the public and will host an abundance of activities including dance, basketball, cooking, yoga, arts and crafts, healthy eating, martial arts, and more. Doll E. Daze | April 22

On Tuesday, April 22 the Fields Corner Branch Library will host Doll E. Daze from 1 pm until 2 pm. This event will take place at the Fields Corner Branch Library located at 1520 Dorchester Avenue in Dorchester. Join the library for an intergenerational doll making program. Set on the coast of Africa, nearly 300 years ago, the tale of Cecilia’s wrap doll was told many times by Grandma Elmira. Today this tale has been recreated into a performance that captivates its audience as they learn the secrets of enslaved children’s courage.

Patriot's Day Breakfast at UUUM | April 21

On Monday, April 21 the Unitarian United Urban Ministry (UUUM) will host a Patriot’s Day event. Join UUUM for a free breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, and other delicious treats. There will be an award ceremony, scholarship presentation, and a William Dawes Ride Reenactment by the National Lancers.

This event will take place at the Ministry located at John Elliot Square in Roxbury from 8 am until 1 pm. Come celebrate Boston’s role in freeing the American colonies from British occupation. While Paul Revere headed to Concord, William Dawes set out from the First Church in Roxbury to Lexington on the same night, April 18,1775. Dawes's mission was to warn John Hancock and Samuel Adams they were in danger of arrest. Join the UUUM for their annual Patriot's Day Breakfast followed by the Reenactment of William Dawes's Ride.

Hub Theatre Presents: Three Days of Rain | April 19

Saturday, April 19 will be your last chance to see the Hub Theatre Company of Boston perform Three Days of Rain. This event will take place at the First Church located at 66 Marlborough Street in Boston. This play tells the story of a dysfunctional family’s tumultuous relationship over two generations. The first act is set in 1995, where the adult children of architect Edmund Janeway are dealing with the aftermath of his death. This act will include surprising revelations that will provoke long delayed confrontations. The second act goes back to 1960 when young Janeway and his business partner struggle to design the house that will shape their destiny; but trouble in paradise lies ahead causing difficulties for the next generation to weed through. >> Read More

7/4 Venezuelan Ensemble | April 18

On Friday, April 18 the Boston Philharmonic & Conservatory Lab Charter School will present 7/4 Venezuelan Ensemble. This event will take place at the Strand Theatre located at 543 Columbia Road in Dorchester beginning at 7:30 pm. At the beginning of 2011, 4 Venezuelan trumpet players all products of the Venezuelan System of Children and Youth Orchestra decided to explore and conquer new musical frontiers.

The 7/4 Venezuelan Ensemble has innovative musical and artistic voices which started with the use of trumpets in genres not often featured, like the Argentinean tango. Other innovations include creations or arrangements influenced by deep investigation of musical styles of countries such as Cuba, Mexico and the United States. This is a free event, come enjoy the styles of the 7/4 Venezuelan Ensemble. 

Books of Hope: Poetry for Teens | April 18

On Friday, April 18 the Fields Corner Library will host a poetry event for teens. This event will take place at the Fields Corner Branch Library located at 1520 Dorchester Avenue in Dorchester from 3:30 pm until 4:30 pm. This is an event for teen writers who want to perform and/or publish their work. They will have the chance to meet other young poets who are doing just that through Books of Hope. There will be a performance, workshop, and an opportunity to share their work.

Open Mic Night at Upham's Corner Library | April 17

Does the muse of poetry motivate or inspire you? Uphams Corner Branch of the Boston Public Library will host a poetry event on Thursday, April 17 beginning at 5:30 pm. This event will take place at Uphams Corner Library located at 500 Columbia Road in Dorchester. Participants will have the opportunity to show off their short poetry cool quips and sizzling sentences at the open mic night. All ages are welcome and poems in different languages are highly encouraged. Clean language only. All styles welcome. Each poet will get a maximum of three minutes.

The event is limited to 25 participants, preregistration is required, sign up with Elise at the front desk or with Emily in the children’s room. Interested participants may also call 617-265-0139 to hold their spots.
