Lowell Lecture Series | May 1

Boston Public Library

On Thursday, May 1 the Boston Public Library will host the Lowell Lecture Series. This event will take place at the Rabb Lecture Hall located at the Boston Public Library at 700 Boylston Street beginning at 6 pm.

Maria Tatar will be the guest speaker of the evening. She is the John L. Loeb Professor of Germanic Languages and Literature at Harvard University where she chairs the Program in Folklore and Mythology. Maria is the author of Classic Fairy Tales, The Annotated Brothers Grimm, The Annotated Peter Pan, and Enchanted Hunters: The Power of Stories in Childhood. She is also a frequent contributor to The New Yorker and The New York Times. Maria is currently working on a volume of African American folktales.

Dorchester Coalition for Safe Neighborhoods | April 29

People in a Neighborhood

On Tuesday, April 29 the Dorchester Coalition for Safe Neighborhoods will host a daytime public safety meeting. This meeting will take place at the Boston Police C11 Station located on 40 Gibson Street in Dorchester from 1:00 pm until 2:30 pm. This meeting will be hosted by Captain Sexton. The meeting will be held in Southwest Dorchester and is open to all residents, schools, businesses, and community organizations. Lunch will be provided and there will be parking on the street.

Mayor Walsh's Press Conference in Upham's Corner | April 28

Strand Theatre

On Monday, April 28 Mayor Walsh will host a press conference under the Strand Theatre marquee located at 543 Columbia Road in Dorchester. This event will begin at 11 am. Join Mayor Walsh, local residents, businesses, and community partners to celebrate some of the exciting things happening in Upham’s Corner, including the Columbia Road improvement project, support for existing business community, new restaurants, Strand Theatre improvements, among many other things. There will be light refreshments and remarks. This event is open to the public. Share this event among friends, family, neighbors, and others!

Fields Corner Neighborhood Advisory Council | April 28

On Monday, April 28 the Fields Corner Neighborhood Advisory Council meeting will take place. This meeting will take place at St. Marks School Hall located at 1725 Dorchester Avenue beginning at 6:30 pm. The 7 civic groups that share the boundaries of Fields Corner will share more about their association. The seven associations that will be present are Clam Point Neighborhood Association, Fields Corner Civic Association, Five Streets Neighborhood Association, Freeport Adams Neighborhood Association, Meeting House Hill Neighborhood Association, Melville Park Association, and St. Marks Area Civic Association. This meeting hopes to bring voices together to make changes in the community and get attention to those who can help make a difference. On Sunday, April 27 the Dorchester will host a program at the William Clapp House located at 195 Boston Street in Dorchester. This event will begin at 2 pm. The Stars and Stripes of American Music Program will host Wheaton College Professor Delvyn Case who will explore the music of three American homegrown composers - Charles Ives, Aaron Copland, and George Gershwin - and how they forged a uniquely American style of classical music that incorporated the folk and popular music they heard across the country. Devlyn Case is a composer, conductor, scholar, performer, and educator who has taught at many colleges and universities

Diary of A Wimpy Kid Series Creator Visits the Boston Public Library | April 27

On Sunday, April 27 the creator of Diary of A Wimpy Kid will be coming to the Boston Public Library. This event is part of the 2014 Lowell Lecture Series. This series runs through May and features beloved author’s and illustrators, noted scholars in children’s field and experts who bring the love of writing and reading to children in groundbreaking ways.The event will take place at the Rabb Lecture Hall of the Central Library in Copley Square located at 700 Boylston Street beginning at 2 pm. There will be book sales and signings after the lecture. Readers of all ages are invited to ask questions to the author and illustrator, Jeff Kinney after the event.

Raise Your Voice Summit | April 26

On Saturday, April 26 Boston City Councilor, Ayanna Pressley has partnered with area organizations to hold the 2nd Annual Empowerment Day also known as the Raise Your Voice Summit. This event will take place at Northeastern University Cabral Center located at 40 Leon Street in Boston from 9 am until 12:30 pm. April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, a nationally recognized movement to honor survivors of sexual violence through community action. The Raise Your Voice Summit is an opportunity to build supportive survivor/ally networks and intervening in sexually abusive behavior. This event is free and will host more workshop than it did in 2013. Workshops are for boys, girls, men, women, and LGBTQ residents ages 8 and up. Preregistration is required.

Dorchester YMCA's Healthy Kids Day | April 26

On Saturday, April 26 the Dorchester YMCA will host a Healthy Kids Day event. This event will take place at the Dorchester YMCA located at 776 Washington Street from 10 am until Noon. This is a national initiative to improve the health and well being of kids. Summer is a time for kids to get up, get out, and grow, but for some kids, exposure to activities that stimulate the body and mind ends with the school year. In fact, research shows that kids are prone to gain weight and fall behind academically due to lack of physical activity during the summer. This event is open to the entire community and is free for kids and families. Some of the activities taking place include, face painting, family friendly group exercise, bounce house, fitness checks, kids boxing, scavenger hunt, and open swim from 2 pm until 5 pm. Mattapan United Stand Against Racism Event | April 25

On Friday, April 25 Mattapan United will host a Stand Against Racism event. This event will take place at the Mattapan Family Service Center located at 531 River Street in Mattapan beginning at 3:30 pm until 6:00 pm. This is an open forum that will include live performances, presentations, great food and more. Racism still exists in our communities and affects youth drastically. This event seeks to bring members of different communities to this open forum to discuss the elimination of racism. Help Mattapan United make sure the youth of Mattapan’s voices are heard.
